# Applying Discounts on Gift Cards

This article covers how to apply a discount to a gift card during checkout. You can also use [gift card promotions](/learn/creating-gift-card-promotions/) to sell discounted gift cards.

To apply a discount to a gift card during checkout, select **More > Gift Card**.

Select **Custom amount**.

Enter the gift card number or scan the gift card barcode and select **Add**. Learn how you can [automatically generate gift card numbers](/learn/gift-card-settings/) for in-person sales.

Enter the gift card value and select **Set custom price**.

Enter the discounted price. You can also select **Change price** to add a percentage discount.

If needed, specify the gift card owner (recipient) and the staff member who sold the gift card. Specifying an owner is helpful if the client is purchasing the gift card for someone else. If no owner is specified, the gift card will be available for the purchasing client to use. Gift card owners can also be updated later via the **Gift Cards** app by selecting the gift card and using the pencil icon.

Select **Go To Payments** and complete the checkout as you normally would.

**Note: **

Once the sale is complete, the gift card will **not** automatically be sent to the specified gift card owner (recipient). Learn how you can manually [send a digital copy of the gift card](/learn/sending-digital-gift-cards/) to the recipient if needed.
