# Why we're returning to Meta

This is about growth and community. By returning to these platforms, we can exist in conversations where we can add real value.

Back in 2021, I wrote about our [decision to step away from Facebook and Instagram](https://www.mangomint.com/blog/why-were-leaving-facebook-and-instagram/). The concerns were about teen safety—not directly tied to our business—but given the severity of what was revealed at the time, we chose to stay off these platforms entirely. I still feel confident that it was the right call.

We've revisited this decision many times. Now, 5 years later, Meta has made substantive changes in the areas we care about, like Teen Accounts with stronger default protections and more parental controls.

Meta's recent guilty verdict is also consequential. It's the first time Meta has been held accountable for their negative impact on mental health issues. It doesn't mean everything's solved today or tomorrow, but it's a step in the right direction.

We also recognize that a huge number of beauty and wellness professionals interact on Instagram and in Facebook groups every day. By returning to these platforms, we can exist in conversations where we can add real value.

This is about growth and community. Sure, we want more people to know about us. We also want to show up in a way that's useful. In 2024, we launched our Do Something Beautiful grant program and donated $20,000 to Oakland-based hair salon Pony Studios to help develop their new sustainable product line with profits supporting [Urban Compassion Project](https://urbancompassionproject.org). Our Meta re-entry will center on Do Something Beautiful _2.0_, a community-based program to celebrate and support smaller, everyday moments of beauty happening across our industry.
