# Why stylists are ghosting your interviews

And what it's really telling you, from a 30+ year salon business coach.

You posted the job. You reviewed the applications. You scheduled the interview. And then… nothing. Just silence.

Take a breath. **You're not doing anything wrong, and you are far from alone**. This is one of the biggest hiring challenges salon owners are facing right now, and when I owned a salon, it happened to me too.

Let's talk about what's really going on, what the research says, and what you can actually do about it.

## It's real, and it's showing up in our industry specifically

Recent industry data shows up to [40% of hair stylists ghost the interview stage](https://www.salontoday.com/whitepapers/the-salon-ghost-report-stop-wasting-hours-chasing-unqualified-applicants), leaving owners playing phone tag with candidates who never fully committed. And the cost isn't small; an empty chair is estimated to run you around [$1,300 a week](https://www.salontoday.com/whitepapers/the-salon-ghost-report-stop-wasting-hours-chasing-unqualified-applicants).

The old playbook is working against you too. Callback rates on traditional phone follow-up are [as low as 3%](https://www.salontoday.com/whitepapers/the-salon-ghost-report-stop-wasting-hours-chasing-unqualified-applicants) right now.

Your candidates are living in their DMs and text threads. The beauty world is small and connected. Trust me, how you make people feel during the hiring process travels fast.

## What ghosting is really telling you

A stylist not showing up isn't a personal insult. It's information. Maybe the process felt slow or unclear. Maybe they got nervous and nothing eased that. Maybe your communication style didn't match how they actually talk day to day.

And sometimes, a stylist just changes their mind, receives a counteroffer, or life gets in the way. That has nothing to do with you, and you can't control it.

What you can control is making sure the stylists who were going to say yes actually get to, because your process was clear, warm, and easy to follow through on. That's where I want you focused.

## How to prevent stylists from ghosting you

Here are my top 5 tips to stop stylists from ghosting you.

### Start with a phone interview

This is the first step I teach every salon owner I coach, and it makes a bigger difference than people expect. Before you bring anyone in, do a short 15-20 minute call first—phone, Zoom, even an Instagram video call.

A quick call is a much smaller ask than time off and a drive across town to meet a stranger.  Plus it builds real connection before you're face-to-face. By the time you meet, you already like each other's energy–it's an interview with you, not “some salon.” It filters gently too, so if it's not the right match, you both find out early and kindly.

### Ask questions that build trust

Structured, specific questions dramatically improve your odds of a great hire over off-the-cuff ones. Ask behavior-based questions that require candidates to share real examples, giving you a better understanding of how they've handled similar situations in the past.

Some of my favorites:

- “Tell me about a time a client wasn't happy with their service. What did you do?”

- “Walk me through a time you had to learn a new technique quickly.”

- “What does a great day behind the chair look like for you?”

- “What stood out to you about us?”

Skip the “greatest weakness,” hypotheticals, and leading questions. A stylist is interviewing you right back, and your questions preview what it's like to work for you.

### Get your communication ready before you post

The stylists who don't ghost you already decided you were worth showing up for, and that decision happens in the first message they get back from you. Have a warm response template ready to send in under 24 hours, a clear picture of what happens next, and your tone decided in advance.

When I first started hiring, there weren't tools built for this. You posted, you waited, you hoped. Now the industry has [SalonJobs](https://www.salonjobs.com/),  a place to post your opening and connect directly with stylists who are actually looking, instead of chasing candidates who never meant to show up.

### Help candidates feel good about showing up

Be clear in your job post about schedule, pay, and culture. Respond fast. Send a friendly confirmation the day before like, “Looking forward to chatting tomorrow at 2pm!” Keep it warm and inviting.

And before they ever apply, they're checking your website and social for real photos of your team, transparency around pay and growth, and proof your current team is thriving.

The more your online presence reflects the real experience of working with you, the less likely they are to disappear before they get there.

### Build relationships in your community

I've stared at my phone waiting for a text back from a stylist I knew was a good fit, and it never came. What changed things for me was getting close with my local cosmetology school and its instructors. That relationship put me in front of stylists before they were even job-hunting, so by the time they were ready to apply, I wasn't a stranger with an opening, I was already someone their instructor vouched for.

This matters because trust travels faster than any job post. Show up, guest teach, work the job fairs, and get to know the instructors who field, "Where should I apply?" every day.  By the time you have a chair to fill, you're already the answer instead of a name they're seeing for the first time.

## Why this works

Ghosting is a signal, and you get to respond to it with clarity, warmth, and a process that feels good on both sides. Lead with a simple phone interview, ask questions that build real connection, and let your online presence be an honest preview of your culture. You'll build the kind of hiring experience that attracts stylists who are excited, invested, and ready to show up.
